The crest and lower cross-piece of the chair’s back planed, squared up, and with the mortises and tenons cut. I like to cut the joinery while things are still square and straight - before all the curves go in.
Even the most complex projects start with a simple block of wood. This chunk of sapele will become the horizontal crest at the top of the chairback and the horizontal cross-member at the bottom of the chairback.
